Band practice & Band BBQ

♫♪I love NAS, Concert Band, Trombones and my seniors!!♪♫

Band practice yesterday! No Sec 1 Orientation, it's next Wednesday. Jezer came today. Warm up first. Half way through warm ups Cliff just suddenly stopped us because 2 new comers came -.- Even when the conductors come we finish our warm up or song then greet. It's as if they're more important than the conductors -.- Then Sesame Street then sectionals. Sectionals was fun! :D Our section so cute, cover up for each other when we cannot play, haha! :D So cool too! And then we have trombone choir :D Darryl loves to sing! Then Kokomo. Jezer first word wrong already, haha. We got a lot of melody, I went to Youtube to find the song. The whole sectionals only practise 2 songs. Then combined at 11am. Mr Yeo do A Monmouth Overture a bit. Then Kokomo. So cool. Usually at the starting the woodwinds play, we rest. Now we play they rest very long, hahaha! Practice supposed to end at 12pm, we ended after 12 and then Mr Yeo, Ms Ong and the majors talk until 1pm.

Then later got BBQ. Going there, meet at school bus stop and Serene's father send her, Fernandez, Nadhirah and me there. Supposed to be at 5 but we reached after 5 and couldn't find BBQ pit 21. We found it at 5.30 but still a lot of people haven't come yet. When Jezer came, he gave me chocolate! :D It's for making us miss our break earlier during sectionals. See!

Tr♥mb♥ne

The trombone drawing at the end is by Chong Jin. She drew it first then I wrote the word. Just coincidentally the 'e' was beside it. I was inspired to write something on the sand by this

Germaine drew it. It's our names. There's GER (Germaine), SER (Serene), CJ (Chong Jin), NAD (Nadhirah), REB (me), FER (Fernandez) and 30 (date). My name not in the picture, only can see one R at the top. I used paranoma mode when I tool the picture (with my phone). Don't know why become like that. Paranoma mode can take a horizontally long picture, by moving the camera. So boring there. I hardly ate anything. The beach scene reminded me of Kokomo. There were coconut trees, nice. The music video shows a beach.

Samuel came too! I was surprised. Samuel so lonely there, I see already also heartache. He reminds me of myself... Darryl came very late. It was already dark -.- And I couldn't recognise him a bit, cut hair. Cai Yan came late too, she got work. I thought she wasn't coming. When she saw me she went "Friend!" or something like that, haha. Kevin came even later. He said he wasn't coming so I didn't know it was him when I saw a tall guy walking although I thought it looked like him. First thing he asked is "Where's Samuel?" Serene asked me what present we gave to our senior. I was like, what present? Then she said it's a tradition that we give presents to our graduating seniors. So next year I must give to Darryl. (Then I smile when she said this) And nobody told me that -.- Did they even get her a present? Suky and Jezer came earlier. So many trombonists :) But still boring. Darryl suddenly come to me and say "Rebecca, (I look at him) take picture with Cai Yan." "Huh??" "Take picture with Cai Yan." So the trombonists took pictures together that I dare not look at. I look retarded and ugly in pictures, which I don't look like really. Then went home. Bye.

Band practice

Band practice today! Took my trombone and went out of the store room. Darryl came a bit late. It was raining. We started with Chromatic Low Tones. First few notes already felt like there was saliva inside. Then Total Training. Cheng Heng didn't come. After warm ups, Mr Yeo asked us what we learnt from the exchange programme. He asked the Sec 3s. Seniors & Juniors think alike! :D Then we played A Monmouth Overture. Then Sesame Street. I didn't wanna play Sesame Street but I did try. Better than yesterday. Then play Kokomo. Kokomo sounds different. It's... Latin maybe? I found a shortcut to position 7. I found it out myself only now when someone knew it and didn't tell me -.- Hmph!... Just joking! :D Mr Yeo dismissed us early at 11.30am today because it's Christmas Eve, haha! We were still sitting there and the majors talking to us. A funny conversation between me & Darryl. Don't know if other people consider it funny but I do. Haha! I can get agitated in conversation, not the irritated way though, it's because I find something ridiculous or funny :D There's band BBQ on 30 Dec, I'm not going. Bye!

Band practice yesterday! :D It was already 8am but both Darryl & Cheng Heng not here, so Cliff asked me to call them. I call Darryl, never answer. I call Cheng Heng, never answer. In the end, Cheng Heng came but Darryl didn't :( Warm up with Total Training until 8.30am. Then sectionals until 9am, 30min. Cheng Heng teach me Overture No. 1. Our parts are very different! There's one part, my notes are at the bottom of the staff lines, his notes are at the top of the staff lines, he's like "Why your part so low?" Haha. Oiled my slide! :D We learnt the first page today! :D Yay! 9am already, he told me to just wait for them to call us back in, but I continue practising and try the second page too. Then Shimei came and call us back in because Ms Leong came. We went back in and played Overture No. 1. I'm not that bad at it now :D Then at 10.30am we had 30min break until 11am.

I asked Chong Jin for all the Overture No. 2 scores. Oh yes, before break when we're playing Overture No. 1, Ms Leong said she hears trombones playing some notes so loud suddenly. That means it's like "Da...da...da...BAA!!!" Hahaha! I asked Serene and she said she could hear me doing that. After Overture No. 1 we tried A Monmouth Overture, not easy. Then Sesame Street, supposed to be easy. But isn't it too childish to attract Sec 1s? Anyway, I didn't really know the order. There's a lot of repeat signs. Then Cheng Heng explain already I still don't know. "This part first time we play then second we rest. Then this part we rest rest rest rest rest until here "play both times" then we play, then second time then we play. Then this part..." ??? He was getting faster and faster, even he finds it funny.

After band practice, they said there's Band BBQ on 30 Dec, each person must pay $8 -.- Then went home. I went to Suky's concert. I met Mabeline at Hougang MRT station then we went to Dhoby Ghaut station and then Raffles Place station to meet the others there. The others met at 5pm at Tampines station. Then from there, we walked to Victoria Concert Hall. The band is Philharmonic Youth Winds. At 8+ there was a 20min intermission. After a while, Suky came and I gave her the present that Liang Rong bought before we went there. It's a bear in a bouquet. You know, a bouquet of flowers? Just that in the wrapping is a white bear instead of flowers. Then she was like, so happy, haha! :D After the intermission, the band continued playing until 9+ when the concert ended. The people started shouting encore and they were prepared for an encore. Some off them took out Christmas hats and they played a combination of Christmas songs. The concert was nice I think. It's a big band too. Reached home at 11+, tired already. Bye!

Band exchange programme

Band practice today! :D Finally, after so long! Today is exchange programme at Greenridge Secondary School. My mouthpiece was found in Darryl's case, hahaha! Anyway, there were 3 schools at Greenridge. Us, Greenridge and Dunearn Secondary. Warm ups first, chromatic low tones. The first note I play already felt like there was a lot of saliva in the trombone. Then Total Training. Then a little performance by every school. We're up first, with Novena. My sound sounded weird, and I played horribly. The other schools went to the side and sat on the floor while we played. Very supportive, they cheer before and after we played. Then after our performance, we went to the side to watch the other bands play. After all 3 bands played, there was break of 25min until 11.05am. During break, we just stood around and did nothing. They gave us a bottle of water. After break was combined, 3 bands combined. Mr Yeo said there's over 10 trombones. I think there were 5 bass trombones including me. (Not the instrument itself, the song part) We played Overture No. 1. It's only my 2nd time playing. The stand that Darryl passed to me was spoilt-.- So I shared with the person beside me. He knew almost the whole Overture No. 1. I think he learnt before. We didn't sit according to schools, we sat according to our parts. I learnt a bit of it. After Overture No.1 we played Overture No.2. Overture No.1 is easier. At 12pm we went back to school. I kept my trombone and went home. Tomorrow got Suky's concert. Bye!

Taiwan trip

♫♪I love NAS, Concert Band, Trombones and my seniors!!♪♫

Yo! I'm back from Taiwan! :D TAIWAN ROCKS! :D 7 days in Taiwan :D I left on 13 and reached Taiwan on 14 December. When coming back, I left yesterday and reached Singapore today. Taiwan is cool! Literally. Taiwan is beautiful, it's nice :) I like Taiwan :) I forgot the details of everyday. We just eat, sleep and shop everyday. At least I don't eat that much. My tour is one day one place so after eating we sit in the bus and go somewhere else. Then people sleep in the bus. Then we go shopping also. I'm the youngest in the tour group. I heard one guy was same age as me, but I'm younger because my birthday is later, so I'm still the youngest. I got a new friend :) The age gap is quite big though. Chun Shan yo! I enjoyed basketball with you too! :) But later when I go back to the hotel my hands pain, hahaha! I think you don't have right? Because you're taller so it's easier for you, haha. I ate 冰糖葫芦! :D Nice nice nice! I ate it twice :D First day and... I forgot which day. Ok, bye!

Last day in Genting. After breakfast, take all our stuff and gather at the grand foyer. Taking attendance-asking every section if all the members were here. Cliff called Trombone and looked at me. I thought Darryl was there because I saw him just now, so I nodded, and was wondering why Darryl didn't answer. But later I saw him come and he sat behind -.o So actually he wasn't here... Actually I'm sitting with Xue Qi, Jaslyn & Xuan Lin are behind us, Darryl & James are behind them. But later changed, I go behind and sit with Jaslyn. Me & Jaslyn went toilet, then when we came out, I stopped at the entrance because I wanted to take a picture of the band. Then this cleaner lady came in with a vacuum cleaner and it was about to run over Jaslyn's feet then she screamed. Hahaha! It's Jaslyn who's gonna be hurt but instead of her screaming, it's the cleaner screaming, hahaha! Jaslyn just stepped over it. I didn't get a picture. But actually I did get one not of the band, of the place, I think it was before that. Jaslyn came up with an idea. I got a picture of someone in the end. Don't know whether it's obvious because my camera was facing away a bit. Anyway, I got the picture :D Thanks to her idea :D I'm not going to put it here, not safe. But I will put the picture I took of the place :D Look!

Actually many schools were there, but no one walked past here when I took the picture. Pasir Ris Sec sat beside us and the silver eupho player was beside me. Not directly beside I mean, there's space between the schools. Maybe Darryl saw her too. Haha, she talked to him a bit during the workshop on Wednesday. You know, my room has 2 windows. One's facing outside. Outside my room also has a window. I went to another end of the corridor with another window and saw the theme park! So I took 2 pictures of it. I put my phone outside the window :O Haha, look!

The bus came at about 9am. We put our instruments and luggages on the bus then got up. Me & Jaslyn were a bit late, there was only one place left I think, so we had to sit in front of Darryl & James. Haha! We stopped at Yong Peng for lunch again. This time no sharing. I was fine on the bus because I wasn't hungry :D When we reached school, we brought our instruments upstairs to the store room. Then I went back down and waited for my father. Go home take bus again -.- Another long bus ride. When I reached home, I went to my grandmother's house first. Ate dinner there then went home. I took pictures of some things. Look! :D

21st Century International Band Festival

27 November 2008 Thursday

Today is a free day actually but I had to go for a workshop with Darryl. Yesterday during the debrief after the results, Mr Yeo chose 2 people from every section to attend a workshop conducted by Professor John Howard on next year's SYF set piece, Overture No.1 For Wind Band. Mr Yeo said "Trombone Section, Darryl & Rebecca, because you're the only 2 in the section." Haha. The workshop was from 10.30am to 12.30pm. I brought the booklet, my file and my trombone. Darryl asked "Need to bring that one meh?" (booklet) Actually can just take notes on the score -.- Why didn't I think of that? Actually I wanted to borrow slide oil from him, he said later. But later there was no time, so my slide haven't oiled yet.

We went to the Grand Ballroom but the people there said we can only send one person from each section to the stage due to space constrains. At first I think Darryl wanted me to go. He said "You go la. Or I go?..." "You go la..." So he went. So I, and those who didn't have to go, went into the waiting area (where we waited before our performance on Tuesday) and sat in a row behind people from the same section from different schools. Then later we went out to watch them have workshop. We put our instruments in front of the stage. I took my file and sat somewhere. I couldn't see trombones :( The workshop is Professor John Howard conducting them and they play. If they've never tried it before then they have to side-read. I followed with my score. Haha, when he asked trombones to play, I keep saying "Darryl!" but not shout, just say only, and quite soft :D Once he asked 2nd trombones to play, I did that again. I only heard one trombone at first, then later I heard 2. One person kept coming in early. I think that at first, the one person who played is Darryl. I also think that the person who came in early was the other trombonist. I think only, I don't know because I didn't ask him. They learnt the whole song in 2 hours. It's an honour to attend a workshop by that professor I heard. The woodwinds got to send both representatives from the section to the stage. Not fair -.- Then after it ended, me & Jaslyn were waiting for our seniors. Waiting and waiting, wondering why they haven't come down yet. Then (Jaslyn) "There!" (Me) "Oh cheh! Hahaha!" Haha! Darryl said it's actually very easy, just learn the rhythm then very easy already. Go back to school he play for me the rhythm. He said it, so if he cannot play I whack him! Hahaha!

Then went for lunch. At first me and Jaslyn only, later Yi Hui, Germaine & Serene joined us. They went for the workshop too. Then we went to the outdoor theme park. If my birthday wasn't over yet then I would have been counted as a child and my ticket would have been cheaper. My birthday just passed by 4 days, haha. We went to the roller coaster first, called corkscrew. I think I've never been on one. There's 2 parts where the whole thing just go completely upside down you know! And when it goes down or turns it feels as if you're gonna drop out. Freaky. I kept looking down. At least I'm not in front where everything can be seen. My neck hurt after that-.- And I had headache. I didn't scream, haha, or cry. I thought I might cry. Serene was also not feeling well so when the others went for other rides, the 2 of us just watched them. I ate ice cream too, haha. I wasted money. I only went for the first and last ride, both roller coasters -.- I should have stayed in my room and learn Overture No.1. Anyway, after theme park was dinner, then the Closing Ceremony. The top 3 schools performed. Hmm...I can't remember anything after that... Bye.

21st Century International Band Festival

25 November 2008 Tuesday

Today's the day of the competition. Woke up at 6.50am, washed up and went for breakfast. At 8.30am Darryl came and asked me to go for sectionals. He's in room 820 now. We went to look for euphos and he talked to me a bit :) Or else I'll be bored. Did I have a good sleep? No -.- Haha. Sectionals in Darryl's room (with euphos -.- -.- -.-) Practising with ANOTHER section during SECTIONALS is a WASTE OF TIME. THEY make mistakes, WE stop. Stupid mistakes, damn heck irritating to the core! Darryl has to understand that sectionals means one section. When I'm the SL in 2010, I will not make my section suffer like me now! Xue Qi thinks that if Kevin was here, DL won't make us have bi-sectionals because then there'll be 3 and not 2 people. His thinking not straight is it? That reason might be possible, since she mentioned that during practice in school, we trombones don't practise with them, but why practice with them here? She makes sense. There's a high chance that's the reason. *sighs* Anyway, sectionals was fun (although it's irritating) He very bad. Last time on MSN say will show me how to write his Chinese name the next day, until now haven't. Haha! We were talking about Sara, a current Sec 3 who quit band, trombone, last year. I was saying her Chinese name sounds like mine. She's Shi Ya, I'm Shi Ying. Then I said "Oh ya, you haven't show me how to write your Chinese name yet!" "....(thinking)...don't want." -.- And, MIRACLE! My playing was perfect for the first time. Don't know why, I could play the whole both songs. Usually I'd get tired at the melody of Singapura Medley but today both were perfect! After sectionals,went back to my room, then went to gather for whole band rehearsal. Went to the area outside the gym, which is one floor below first floor. We went with instruments and files. Silent practice/singing practice they call it :D Just sing our parts and do positioning. Then go to the Grand Ballroom to practise. There for 20min then tuning room for 15min where we did no tuning, just practising some more. Then lunch. Then practise more in James' room this time, even more irritated for some reason. Then went back to my room to get ready for the actual performance.

Changed into band uniform and black shoes. Gathered at the singing area for singing practice again. Then to the tuning room and after that's the actual performance!!! I played badly. Won't mention the details. After that, we gathered at hall 6, I cried but the tears didn't flow out. I was already emotionally unstable and you added to it. Left our instruments there and went to watch the last band perform. Went back to rooms to keep instruments and went to singing area for debrief, then dinner.

My bag. Took it yesterday. This and the chocolate are my 2 birthday presents :)

Woke up and got ready for the day, then went for breakfast. Then went to the room again, workshop starts at 10.30am only. Darryl came to say, meet at the lift lobby at 10.30. At 10am, Xue Qi told me it's 10 already. I was like, so? It's only 10, the workshop's 10.30. She said Darryl said 10 so I quickly set up my dearest 宝贝 trombone and left the room, although I still thought he said 10.30. No one was at the corridor! Everyone was like...surprised and all, even DL wasn't ready. He probably said 10.30. Anyway we can't gather at 10.30 because it starts at 10.30. So I waited outside his room and we went to the lift lobby. Our workshop is sectional but ours is with euphos (again -.-) So we waited for them and Darryl asked me if I brought writing material. I forgot! So I ran back to get the pencil case and booklet (which has pages for lesson notes) and ran back.

Hmm...I won't put the details of the workshop but I'll say I did learn some things. And DL and I have the same reaction when something happens. We look at each other, hahaha, very funny! At the end of the workshop, we had 30min left, so the instructor (who's a trombonist) asked if we wanted to play any song. Pasir Ris Sec (who had 6 trombonist & 2 euphos (1 gold)) played the last part of a song. I don't know what song that is. They also only have 1 female trombonist! The instructor corrected them while they played again and again. Then after that, he wanted US to play. All DL's fault la! Before they played he already wanted to play Novena. He put the file on the stand and opened to 2nd page of Novena! He wanted to play bar 121 which is 2nd page. Then the instructor looked at it and asked us to play. "All your fault la! Later cannot pitch the high F!..." Haha! But luckily I managed :D After we ended, we went for lunch then went to Meeting Room 10 to watch videos of Japanese bands perform. Can hear the trombone workshop in Room 11! :D We were there.

Watched until 4pm+ then they said the hotel gave us free game of bowling so I actually wanted to go with them to see them play. But they went up to 22nd floor and did nothing at the corridor so I thought they weren't going anymore. So I went to Jaslyn's room to play eupho :D Then I found out they all went bowling I don't know where -.- Eupho's easy, very easy. I played high high B flat. And I didn't use much air and the sound was loud. I played some parts of Novena on the eupho.

After dinner was the Friendship Concert. Liang Rong wanted us to sing happy birthday to Ms Ong so we did, and another school sang it in Chinese! :D After the concert, the results were announced. I wrote everything in my diary so I won't write here. Our results, my feelings, my reactions, everything. My face was wet, and I lost a lot of water... Bye.

21st Century International Band Festival

Yo! I'm back from Genting! Acually I came back on 28 November but I didn't blog because I have to write in my book first, rack my brains to think for those days I haven't written for.

24 November 2008 Monday

First day in Genting! :D I was a few minutes late and missed my attendance. We're supposed to be there by 6.30am! We went to get our instruments and Darryl wished me happy birthday for a 3rd time :O He asked me to keep his file and Total Training for him -.- But I did anyway, because I'm a nice nice junior :) We filled up our white cards and shifted the things onto the bus. I couldn't bring my trombone up, haha! But later they said there's space in the luggage compartment, so Benedict shifted my instrument down. He lost his balance for a while because his right hand's holding forgot Horn or Clarinet then his left hand's holding trombone, so not even. Haha, careful... and thanks. Ah yes! Jaslyn gave me chocolate for my birthday present! :D It's nice :D

We stopped at Yong Peng for lunch but me and Jaslyn weren't hungry so we shared Nasi Lemak although it's already not that much. Then later in the bus, I got hungry, which made me have headache which made me vomit -.- Which made me feel better. Luckily the bus already stopped at a toilet so I could go throw the bag. When we reached Genting, we stopped at a temple. It's related to the founder of Genting Highlands... I think he owns it or it was built for him, I forgot already. Called Uncle Lim, then I said Darryl is also Uncle Lim xD Shh...! Last time during band practice he sat like in a kopitiam then Ms Leong say something kopitiam, then he's like "Sorry sorry..." xD Anyway, there's toilet there, it's the only time I went toilet throughout the whole journey :O When we reached the hotel, we settled down and got our room keys. Then we went to our rooms.

This part's very funny. At the lift lobby on the 22nd floor (all our rooms are on that floor) I put down Trombone (it's heavy) and told Xue Qi to go look for our room, 817. So she went off with her stuff and my luggage also (my small bag's quite big and I got a trombone to carry). Our room was right at the end, the last room, so she took quite long. So I went to look for her. It's a long way from the lifts. When I found her, I put down Trombone when it was only a few steps to the room (heavy!) and walked towards the room and ask her to help take my trombone. She said "Sure. So light, carry all the way also can..." Then I walked to Trombone again and went "You think very light ah?! Light then you try carry all the way-(suddenly stops)" Darryl opened the door and walked out. -.o I stared at him with a surprised look and he asked "You rooming here ah?" I didn't reply. What in the world was that?! Funny...and shocking, to find out that my senior is right beside me when they randomly assigned rooms. Then dinner and desert. I ate my fill :) Not bad, I thought it'd be worse.

After dinner, I went to try Xuan Lin's blouse (uniform) and changed with her because mine too big. Darryl wanted to change room... so he did, and he's not beside me anymore, but still very close-3 rooms away. No actually only 2, 820. After dinner was Opening Ceremony in the Grand Ballroom. 2 bands performed. My jacket was still wet -.- I put my bottle in my bag and it must have accidentally been pressed. So Germaine lent me hers, she had 2 :) Went back to rooms, bathed... Xuan Lin & Jaslyn came to tell us we had to gather at 10.30pm. I thought we could sleep already, haha. So we and some other girls went to the grand foyer that area but no one was there. Germaine called Liang Rong and we went back up to the lift lobby on 22nd floor, everyone was there! :O We were just on time, or a few seconds late. Briefing for tomorrow. Have sectionals in the room. I went "How to have sectionals in the room?!" Because only 2 trombonists are here...! I couldn't sleep because someone was snoring -.- -.-

Tomorrow is the competition already!!! Bye!
